Kurt Van Merode

materials / structural engineering
Kurt graduated as a civil engineer-architect from KU Leuven. He discovered his affinity with supporting structures early on as a technical designer at the Flemish water purification company Aquafin. At the same time, as an engineer, he was particularly inspired by the social impact of construction. He first set up his own architectural practice that focused on small-scale social housing. He gradually specialized as a construction consultant with a particular focus on the stability of wooden structures.
Kurt likes to think beyond the obvious construction issue. This starts with thoroughly questioning the question. Which roof shape is really suitable for a specific location and purpose? Can neighbors build their homes in such a way that they share the absorption of wind loads, for example? The answers to such questions transcend the technical optimization of the use of materials. They sometimes raise new questions about social conventions, urban development and property rights.
