Bart is a geologist with an additional specialization in marine sciences. As a researcher, he was active at the Flanders Hydraulics Laboratory, the Flemish Government and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. He worked on various projects including hydraulic modeling of rivers, sonar measurements at sea, integrated water and nature management and the development of the European Flood Forecasting System (EFAS).
Throughout his career, Bart has also gained in-depth experience at various research agencies such as IMDC and Hydroscan. For example, he led various water sensitivity analyses on construction in flood-prone areas, the design of rainwater infrastructure (wadis, buffer and storage basins), groundwater studies for nature development projects and drought and climate impact studies. He also contributed to the Flemish policy plan to protect the coast against rising sea levels. In addition to being a team leader for integrated water management, he worked as a knowledge manager for hydroinformatics. In addition, he is currently active in the modeling of urban climates and the challenge of heat islands.
