Gie is an architect and first gained practical experience in various offices in Belgium and the Netherlands. He then worked as an assistant professor at the University of Hasselt and later as a lecturer at the Avans University of Applied Sciences in Tilburg and Breda. In his research and lessons he focused on CO2-negative design and biobased materials. He was also a speaker and workshop leader at conferences such as Non-conventional Materials and Technologies (NOCMAT) in João Pessoa, the World Bamboo Congress in Damyang, the Architecture Biennale in Venice and ECOWEEK in Krakow, Pristina, Thessaloniki and Tel Aviv.
Gie bundled a significant part of his knowledge in the publication ‘Guide to Designing with Rapidly Renewable Materials’ and presented it at the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. This practical manual offers more than 50 construction details for assembling roof, wall and floor packages from biobased materials, including accompanying specifications. He is active as a speaker at various events on sustainable construction and, as an architect, still regularly works on his own innovative concepts with biobased materials.
