Koen Vandewalle

energy / materials / water

Koen graduated as an architect from the Sint-Lucas Higher Institute for Architecture in Ghent. He also obtained a postgraduate degree in bio-ecological construction at KaHo Sint-Lieven (KU Leuven). He first gained a lot of experience at architectural firms such as Buro II and ARCHI+I. Afterwards he also worked on his own practice. In 2018 he built the first autonomous greenhouse house in Belgium. This KASECO+ concept strives for complete autonomy in terms of energy (without active heating), water purification and water supply within a circular building that is largely biodegradable. Since then, various variants of this concept have been realized and it has gained an international following.

Koen is passionate about sustainable and innovative construction methods and also regularly contributes to research and policy projects. For example, he contributed to the VLAIO COOCK Water-conscious Building project. Through the professional association NAV, he also regularly advises architects on the new rainwater regulation and other applications of water in buildings and their environment.
